Jandiala

Jandiala refers primarily to two distinct locations in the South Asian subcontinent, both situated in the Punjab region but belonging to different modern states.

The first, Jandiala Guru (or Jandiala), is a town and municipal committee in the Jalandhar district of Punjab, India. It lies near the banks of the Sivalik Hills, approximately 20 kilometres (12 miles) southeast of the district headquarters. The town has a long agricultural history, with wheat, rice, and sugarcane as predominant crops. According to the 2011 census, the population was about 23,000, with a literacy rate of 78%. The local economy also includes small-scale textile and dairy activities, and the town hosts a weekly market that serves surrounding villages. Jandiala Guru is known for its Gurudwara Sant Singh Sabha, a 19th-century place of worship that attracts devotees from the surrounding region. The town is connected to the national rail network via a branch line of the Northern Railway, and it is accessible by state highways linking it to Jalandhar and Pathankot.

The second Jandiala, known as Jandiala Bagh, is a city in Gujrat District of Punjab, Pakistan. It is situated on the north bank of the River Jhelum, roughly 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) north of Gujrat city centre. The municipal administration covers an area of about 18 square kilometres. Jandiala Bagh’s economy is largely agrarian, with fertile alluvial plains supporting the cultivation of wheat, cotton, and mango orchards. The city also hosts a growing small manufacturing sector, including textile mills and food-processing units, supported by proximity to the main N-5 national motorway. According to recent estimates, the population exceeds 45,000, with a diverse religious composition including Muslims, Christians, and Hindus. A notable landmark is the Jandiala Bagh Railway Station, which lies on the main line between Lahore and Rawalpindi and serves as a logistical hub for the region’s agricultural produce.

Both Jandiala localities reflect the typical socio-economic patterns of the Punjab plains, balancing agriculture with emerging industrial and service sectors. They each preserve cultural heritage sites that underscore the region’s Sikh and Islamic histories, respectively, while serving as important nodes within their district’s transport and commercial networks.
