Izomrost

Izomrost is the Hungarian term for a muscle fiber, the basic cellular unit of skeletal muscle. An izomrost is a long, cylindrical, multinucleated cell formed by the fusion of precursor cells during development. It is enclosed by a plasma membrane called the sarcolemma and contains cytoplasm known as the sarcoplasm, which houses many myofibrils. Myofibrils are composed of repeating sarcomeres, the contractile units that give skeletal muscle its characteristic striated appearance. The contraction process is coordinated by the transverse tubule system and the sarcoplasmic reticulum, which regulate calcium signaling.

Each izomrost is innervated by a motor neuron at a neuromuscular junction, allowing neural input to trigger contraction. Contraction occurs through the sliding-filament mechanism, where actin and myosin filaments slide past one another to shorten the sarcomere and generate force.
