Izomelégtelenséget refers to a condition where the body does not produce enough lactase enzyme. Lactase is essential for breaking down lactose, the sugar found in milk and dairy products, into simpler sugars that can be absorbed by the body. Without sufficient lactase, lactose remains undigested in the small intestine and passes into the large intestine, where it is fermented by bacteria.

This fermentation process leads to the characteristic symptoms of lactose intolerance, which can include bloating, gas, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and nausea, often occurring shortly after consuming dairy products. The severity of symptoms can vary greatly among individuals, depending on the degree of lactase deficiency and the amount of lactose consumed.

There are several types of lactase deficiency. Primary lactase deficiency, also known as lactase non-persistence, is the most common form and is genetically determined, becoming more prevalent after infancy. Secondary lactase deficiency can occur due to damage to the small intestine, such as from celiac disease, Crohn's disease, or gastroenteritis. Congenital lactase deficiency is a rare genetic disorder where infants are born with little to no lactase activity.
