Italdesign

Italdesign, officially Italdesign Giugiaro S.p.A., is an Italian design and engineering company known for automotive design, engineering services, and industrial design. It was founded in 1968 by Giorgetto Giugiaro and is based in Moncalieri, near Turin. The firm built a reputation by producing production car designs, concept cars, and design studies for a wide range of automakers, helping shape contemporary automotive styling.

In 2010, Volkswagen Group acquired a majority stake in Italdesign Giugiaro, and the studio has operated as part of VW Group’s design network. Since then, Italdesign has continued to offer design, styling, and engineering services to automotive clients and other industries, maintaining an integrated approach from concept to production-ready design.

Notable work attributed to Italdesign includes the DeLorean DMC-12 (1981), designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro for the company; the first-generation Volkswagen Golf (1974); the Fiat Panda (1980); and the Maserati Bora (1971). These projects illustrate the firm’s influence on both mass-market and high-performance models, as well as its role in shaping design language across several eras.

Today, Italdesign maintains its activities as a design and engineering studio within the VW Group, offering exterior and interior design, engineering development, and prototyping services. The company continues to collaborate with diverse clients worldwide, extending its reach beyond traditional automotive design into related product design and development.
