Giugiaro

Giorgetto Giugiaro (born June 20, 1938 in Garessio, Piedmont, Italy) is an Italian industrial and automotive designer who is widely regarded as one of the most influential designers of the late 20th century. He founded Italdesign Giugiaro in 1968, a design and engineering studio that became one of the world’s leading firms for production and concept vehicles and products.

Giugiaro and his studio have designed automobiles for numerous manufacturers, helping to shape modern automotive styling with an emphasis on clean proportion, functional form, and expressive but restrained lines. His work spans production cars, concept vehicles, and other design projects across industries, and his influence is seen in the widespread adoption of practical, aerodynamically aware silhouettes during the 1970s and beyond.

Notable automobile designs credited to Giugiaro and Italdesign include the Volkswagen Golf Mk1 (1974), Lotus Esprit (1976), Maserati Bora (1971), DeLorean DMC-12 (1981), Fiat Panda (1980) and Fiat Uno (1983), and the BMW M1 (1978). The DeLorean’s stainless steel exterior and the bold wedge shapes of several Giugiaro designs became enduring icons of their eras.

Giugiaro has received numerous awards for his contributions to design, including recognition from the Compasso d’Oro and other design institutions. Today Italdesign operates as an international design and engineering firm, continuing to influence automotive and product design worldwide.
