Iskupiikkejä
Iskupiikkejä is a Finnish term that translates to "hit spikes" or "strike spikes." It most commonly refers to a type of projectile used in the sport of Finnish baseball, known as pesäpallo. In pesäpallo, a batter attempts to hit a ball thrown by a pitcher. If the batter hits the ball in a way that it travels directly out of bounds, either over the outfield fence or outside the foul lines without being touched by a fielder, it is often referred to as an iskupiikki. This type of hit is considered a successful offensive play, as it often results in the batter advancing to at least first base, and potentially further, depending on the field conditions and the trajectory of the ball. The term emphasizes the forceful nature of the hit and its direct, immediate out-of-bounds outcome. While primarily associated with pesäpallo, the concept of a "hit spike" could theoretically be applied to other bat-and-ball games where a powerfully struck ball going out of bounds has specific implications for the game's progression, though its common usage is strongly tied to Finnish baseball.
