Isekust is a term that emerged from online communities, particularly those discussing speculative fiction and anime. It generally refers to a specific subgenre of fantasy or science fiction where a protagonist is transported from their ordinary world into a different, often magical or technologically advanced, one. This new world typically follows its own unique set of rules and systems, which the protagonist must learn and adapt to.

A common trope within isekust is the protagonist possessing knowledge or skills from their previous life that give them an advantage in the new setting. This can range from scientific understanding to strategic thinking or even simply a different cultural perspective. The narrative often focuses on the protagonist's journey of survival, growth, and often, the establishment of a new life or purpose within the unfamiliar environment.

The term itself is a portmanteau, combining "isekai," a Japanese term for "other world," with "kust," which can be interpreted as a stylized or corrupted version of "coast" or "custody," implying a journey or a new belonging. While "isekai" is the established term for this genre in Japanese media, "isekust" is more commonly used in Western fan communities, sometimes with a slightly different connotation or emphasis. The appeal of isekust often lies in wish fulfillment, escapism, and the exploration of new worlds and possibilities.
