Ioniyhdisteissä

Ionic compounds, or ioniyhdisteissä in Finnish, are chemical compounds composed of ions held together by electrostatic forces. These forces are known as ionic bonds, which arise from the attraction between oppositely charged ions. Typically, ionic compounds form between a metal and a nonmetal. The metal atom loses electrons to become a positively charged cation, while the nonmetal atom gains electrons to become a negatively charged anion.

The most common examples of ionic compounds are salts, such as sodium chloride (NaCl), commonly known as table salt. In NaCl, sodium (Na) is a metal that loses an electron to form a Na+ cation, and chlorine (Cl) is a nonmetal that gains an electron to form a Cl- anion. These ions then arrange themselves in a crystal lattice structure, maximizing the attractive forces between opposite charges and minimizing the repulsive forces between like charges.

Ionic compounds generally have high melting and boiling points because a significant amount of energy is required to overcome the strong electrostatic attraction between the ions. They are typically hard and brittle solids at room temperature. In their solid state, ionic compounds do not conduct electricity because the ions are fixed in the crystal lattice and cannot move freely. However, when melted or dissolved in water, the ions become mobile and can carry electric current, making molten or dissolved ionic compounds good conductors of electricity. The solubility of ionic compounds in water varies greatly, with some dissolving readily while others are practically insoluble.
