IoTbasert

IoTbasert is a conceptual open standard and platform designed to enable interoperable Internet of Things deployments across devices, gateways, and cloud services. It emphasizes a modular architecture, common data models, and security-by-design to support scalable, resilient IoT ecosystems.

The reference architecture of IoTbasert comprises several layers: the device layer with sensors and actuators; the edge layer containing gateways or edge compute nodes; the cloud layer for centralized data processing, analytics, and management; and a governance layer that defines identity, access control, and policy enforcement. A core feature is a common data model and protocol bindings to facilitate communication and data exchange, with supports for device discovery, a registry, and service orchestration to enable dynamic composition of solutions.

Key features include device identity and lifecycle management, secure onboarding, mutual authentication, and encryption in transit and at rest. The framework supports over-the-air firmware updates, fine-grained access control, and auditing. It also provides data governance policies, data partitioning, and event-driven processing. Interoperability adapters are designed to bridge IoTbasert with legacy protocols and third-party platforms.

Development and governance are described as open, with a reference implementation and conformance tests. The model encourages community-driven extensions while maintaining backward compatibility and clear deprecation paths, to balance innovation with stability.

Applications envisioned for IoTbasert include smart cities, industrial IoT, agriculture, and consumer automation. Potential benefits are improved interoperability, faster deployment, and stronger security, while acknowledging design complexity and fragmentation risks common to IoT standards.
