Inustus

Inustus refers to a specific type of decorative inlay or ornamentation, primarily found in ancient Roman and Etruscan art and artifacts. The term is derived from the Latin word "inustus," meaning "burnt in" or "scorched." This technique involves the application of molten metal, often gold or silver, into incised channels or designs on a base material. The molten metal would then cool and solidify, creating a permanent and decorative inlay that contrasted with the surrounding material.

This method was particularly popular for embellishing metal objects such as armor, jewelry, and household items. The contrasting colors and textures created by the inlay would add visual richness and value to the piece. While the exact process of "inustus" can vary, it generally involved carefully preparing the surface by engraving or chiseling lines or patterns, heating the metal to be used for inlay until it was molten, and then pouring or pressing this molten metal into the prepared grooves.
