Introgressiota

Introgressiota is a term occasionally used in theoretical discussions of population genetics to denote a minimal unit of material introduced from one population into another through introgression. The term is not part of standard nomenclature and has no universally accepted definition; it appears mainly in modeling exercises that probe the limits of detecting and quantifying very small introgressed contributions. Etymology: it combines "introgression" with the mathematical term "iota," signaling its status as a tiny fraction or unit.

Conceptually, introgressiota can be defined in several related ways. In one framing, it is the probability that a particular genomic locus carries ancestry derived from an introgressed lineage. In another, it is the smallest resolvable unit of introgressed genome, i.e., the smallest haplotype block that can be confidently assigned to a donor population given the data and methods used. A third approach treats introgressiota as a unit of measure—the expected genome-wide fraction of introgressed ancestry expressed at the finest detectable scale.

Measuring or inferring introgressiota relies on local ancestry inference and admixture analysis, often requiring high-depth sequencing, well-characterized reference panels, and simulation-based calibration. Practical use currently centers on theoretical exploration of detection limits and on simulation studies that assess how small a signal can be reliably distinguished from incomplete lineage sorting and sequencing error.
