Intranette

Intranette is a rarely used variant spelling that appears in some texts to refer to intranet, a private network used within an organization. The standard term is intranet; intranette may occur in francophone writings or as a stylized brand name, but it is not widely standardized.

An intranet provides access to internal websites, document repositories, collaboration tools, workflow applications, and line‑of‑business systems for employees and affiliates. It is designed to be accessible only to authorized users, typically through corporate networks, VPNs, or secure remote access.

Technically, intranets rest on private network infrastructure such as LANs and WANs, with directory services, web servers, and application platforms. Security relies on authentication and authorization, encryption in transit, endpoint protection, and network segmentation. Content management, intranet portals, and single sign-on are common features.

Intranets differ from the public Internet in scope, governance, and control. They are managed by an organization’s IT or digital workplace teams and guided by policies on data privacy, retention, and compliance. Variants include extranets, which extend access to partners and suppliers, and private cloud intranets.

History and evolution: Intranets emerged in the 1990s with corporate networks and web technologies and have evolved into digital workplaces with mobile access and collaborative features.
