Interstitiellisissä refers to a category of medical conditions characterized by inflammation and damage to the interstitium. The interstitium is the microscopic space between cells in organs and tissues, playing a crucial role in their structure and function. When this space becomes inflamed or scarred, it can impair the normal functioning of the affected organ.

These conditions can affect various parts of the body, most commonly the lungs, kidneys, and skin. Interstitial lung diseases, for instance, involve inflammation and scarring of the lung interstitium, leading to difficulty breathing, coughing, and reduced oxygen levels. Similarly, interstitial nephritis affects the kidney's interstitium, potentially leading to kidney damage and failure. Interstitial skin conditions can manifest as rashes, swelling, or other dermatological changes.

The causes of interstitial conditions are diverse and can include autoimmune diseases, infections, environmental exposures (such as inhaled dust or toxins), certain medications, and idiopathic causes where the origin remains unknown. Diagnosis often involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, imaging techniques like X-rays and CT scans, and sometimes biopsy of the affected tissue. Treatment strategies are tailored to the specific condition and its underlying cause, aiming to manage inflammation, slow disease progression, and alleviate symptoms.
