Intersticiál

Intersticiál is a term used in several scientific contexts, most notably in medicine and biology, to describe spaces or tissues that lie between or within organs or structures. In a medical context, the term often refers to the interstitial space, which is the area between cells within a tissue. This space is filled with interstitial fluid, a transudate of plasma that bathes the cells, delivering nutrients and removing waste products. The composition and volume of interstitial fluid are crucial for maintaining tissue homeostasis.

The term can also be applied to certain types of lung disease, known as interstitial lung diseases. These conditions affect the interstitium of the lungs, the delicate tissue and space around the air sacs. This can lead to inflammation and scarring, making it difficult for the lungs to transfer oxygen into the bloodstream. Examples of interstitial lung diseases include idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and sarcoidosis.

In a broader biological sense, interstitial refers to anything located in the spaces between. For example, interstitial cells are cells found within the spaces of a particular tissue or organ, distinct from the primary functional cells. This general meaning highlights the concept of being situated within or between larger structures, playing a supporting or secondary role.
