Interprofessionale refers to the collaboration between professionals from different disciplines or fields. In context, it usually denotes joint activities or shared decision‑making that involve more than one profession working together toward common objectives. The English equivalent is interprofessional, and the Italian term is used in policy documents, research studies, and practice guidelines.

The word derives from Latin inter- “between” and profes- “to serve,” coupled with the Italian suffix -ale indicating a quality or relating to. It entered Italian professional vocabulary in the late twentieth century alongside global movements that recognized the limits of single‑discipline approaches.

In healthcare, interprofessional teams comprise physicians, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, therapists, and allied health staff who plan and deliver patient care collaboratively. Education uses the concept in interprofessional education programs, pairing medical, nursing, and other health‑science students. Social service agencies, emergency management, and municipal planning also adopt the model to integrate vocational, technical, and administrative expertise.

The main advantages cited include improved patient outcomes, reduced duplication of services, higher job satisfaction among staff, and more efficient use of resources. Studies report lower rates of medication errors, higher adherence to clinical guidelines, and increased community trust when professionals collaborate.

However, interprofessional practice faces obstacles. Differences in professional cultures, jargon, and training can hinder communication. Power dynamics may marginalize less dominant roles. Institutional barriers such as payment structures, accreditation rules, and information systems also impede seamless collaboration. Ongoing research focuses on developing shared governance models, technology‑enabled communication platforms, and policy reforms to sustain interprofessionale initiatives.
