Internalisierung

Internalisierung refers to the process by which an individual adopts and makes their own the values, beliefs, norms, and behaviors of their society or a particular group. It is a fundamental aspect of socialization, enabling individuals to understand and navigate the social world around them. Through internalization, external rules and expectations become internalized as personal standards, guiding one's thoughts and actions. This process is not passive; it involves an active process of learning, identification, and integration.

The extent and nature of internalization can vary depending on factors such as the individual's personality, the strength of social bonds, and the cultural context. It often begins in childhood through interactions with family, peers, and educational institutions, and continues throughout life. Internalized norms can become deeply ingrained, influencing moral judgments and shaping identity. When individuals internalize societal expectations, they are more likely to conform to social rules and engage in behaviors that are considered acceptable within their group. This process contributes to social cohesion and stability. Conversely, a lack of internalization can lead to social deviance or a sense of alienation.
