Interlacinget

Interlacinget is a term used in speculative discussions of data interleaving to denote a structured interleaving of multiple data streams into a single sequence. In this context, it functions as an abstract model rather than a concrete protocol, allowing researchers to compare interleaving schemes on common ground. The concept is often introduced to examine how timing, ordering, and synchronization affect data recoverability in multi-channel systems.

Formal description (informal): An interlacinget consists of a finite index set I, a set of channels C, and an interleaving rule π that assigns to each index i in I a pair (c, t) where c ∈ C identifies a channel and t marks a subposition or time step. The observed sequence is formed by concatenating the samples in the order determined by π. If π repeats with period p, the pattern is called a periodic interlacinget.

Examples include simple alternation (A, B, A, B, …) and block interleaving (A, A, B, B, A, A, B, B). More complex patterns may depend on time-varying rules or randomization.

Properties of interlacingets include determinism given π, recoverability of each channel’s data when the pattern is known, and sensitivity to misalignment between channels. Hierarchical interlacingets allow nesting of patterns, enabling multi-resolution interleaving.

Applications are primarily theoretical: they provide a framework for comparing scheduling, multiplexing, and interleaving strategies in communications, storage, and streaming contexts. They are not standard protocols but helpful in thought experiments and academic discussions.
