Interiørelement

Interiørelement, or interior element, refers to components that define or modify the interior space of a building. It includes structural components such as partitions and built-in stairs as well as finish, furnishing, and decorative elements.

Interior elements can be broadly grouped into four categories: structural interior elements (partitions, walls, doors, stairs, built-in cabinets); finish and surface elements (walls, ceilings, floors, coatings, acoustical panels); fixtures and fittings (lighting fixtures, plumbing fixtures, heating and ventilation elements, built-in storage); and furnishings and decorative elements (furniture, textiles, artwork, window treatments).

Materials commonly used for interiørelement include wood, metal, glass, plaster, gypsum board, concrete, stone, tile, fabric, and plastic. The choice of material affects durability, maintenance, acoustics, thermal performance, and visual character.

Interior elements serve functional roles—defining spatial layout, enabling movement, supporting services, and providing storage—while contributing to aesthetics, color, texture, and light management. Designers consider ergonomics, accessibility, acoustics, daylighting, energy efficiency, and maintenance when selecting and arranging interiørelement.

Interiørelement are selected in the early stages of interior design and renovation in coordination with architectural structure, building systems, and user needs. They must comply with local codes and standards for safety, accessibility, and fire performance.
