Intercostalscan

Intercostalscan refers to an ultrasound examination of the intercostal spaces. These spaces are located between the ribs. Ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses sound waves to create images of internal body structures. An intercostal scan is typically performed to visualize the pleura, which is the membrane lining the lungs and chest cavity, as well as the intercostal muscles, nerves, and blood vessels.

The primary indications for an intercostal scan include the assessment of pleural effusions, which are abnormal collections of fluid in the pleural space. It can also be used to identify pneumothorax, a condition where air accumulates in the pleural space, causing the lung to collapse. The scan can help in guiding procedures such as thoracentesis, which is the removal of pleural fluid, or chest tube insertion.

Other uses for intercostal ultrasound include evaluating chest wall masses, rib fractures, and intercostal muscle injuries. The procedure is generally quick and does not involve radiation. The patient typically lies down, and a gel is applied to the skin over the area of interest. The sonographer then moves an ultrasound transducer over the skin to acquire images. Findings from an intercostal scan can aid in diagnosis and management of various thoracic conditions.
