Integument-associated is an adjective used in biology to describe something that is related to the integument, the outer protective covering of an organism. The integument includes the skin and its derivatives, such as scales, feathers, fur or hair, and in some groups a shell or exoskeleton. Integument-associated elements may reside in the skin, lie adjacent to it, or interact closely with its physiology.

Common uses include referring to cells, tissues, organs, or microorganisms that are part of or connected to the integument. Examples include integument-associated glands in amphibians and reptiles, sensory receptors and nerve fibers located in the skin, and microorganisms forming the skin microbiome. The term also appears in paleontological descriptions of integumentary structures such as scales, scutes, or hairlike filaments as they relate to the animal’s exterior.

Recognizing integument-associated processes helps differentiate phenomena occurring at the body surface from systemic processes. This framing is used in dermatology, comparative anatomy, microbiology, and ecology to study skin-specific immunity, barrier function, sensory perception, and host–microbe interactions.

Origin and usage: the root integumentum comes from Latin cloak, covering, combined with associated. The term is descriptive rather than taxonomic, and precise clarification of the exact tissue or structure is usually preferred, such as epidermal, dermal, or cutaneous.
