Insuliinitasot refers to the measurement of insulin levels in the blood. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that regulates blood sugar levels. Measuring insulin levels can be important for diagnosing and managing various conditions, particularly diabetes and disorders related to insulin production or sensitivity.

There are several reasons why a doctor might order an insulin level test. It can help differentiate between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas produces little to no insulin, so insulin levels are typically very low. In type 2 diabetes, the body may produce insulin, but it doesn't use it effectively (insulin resistance), or the pancreas may eventually be unable to produce enough. Insulin tests can also help identify hypoglycemia, a condition of low blood sugar, especially if it's suspected to be caused by an insulinoma, a tumor of the pancreas that secretes excess insulin. Furthermore, these tests can assess the function of the pancreas.

The test is usually performed via a blood sample drawn from a vein. Often, the test is done in conjunction with a glucose measurement to provide a more complete picture of the body's insulin response. Fasting is typically required before the test. Elevated insulin levels in the context of normal or high blood sugar can indicate insulin resistance, a precursor to type 2 diabetes. Conversely, very low insulin levels can suggest insufficient insulin production. Interpreting insulin levels requires careful consideration of the individual's symptoms and other medical test results.
