Insuliinimuodoissa refers to the different forms in which insulin is available for the treatment of diabetes. These forms are primarily distinguished by their onset of action, peak effect, and duration of action, which are crucial for mimicking the body's natural insulin secretion patterns.

Rapid-acting insulin formulations begin to work within 15 minutes of injection, peak within 1 to 2 hours, and last for 2 to 4 hours. These are typically taken just before or after meals to control post-meal blood sugar spikes. Examples include insulin lispro, insulin aspart, and insulin glulisine.

Short-acting or regular insulin takes effect about 30 minutes to 1 hour after injection, peaks in 2 to 5 hours, and lasts for 5 to 8 hours. It is often administered 30 minutes before meals.

Intermediate-acting insulin, such as NPH insulin, starts working 1 to 2 hours after injection, peaks between 4 to 12 hours, and lasts for 12 to 18 hours. It is often used to provide basal insulin coverage between meals and overnight.

Long-acting insulin formulations provide basal insulin coverage for extended periods, typically 24 hours or more, with no significant peak. Examples include insulin glargine and insulin detemir. These are usually taken once daily.

Finally, ultra-long-acting insulins can provide coverage for even longer durations, sometimes up to 42 hours.

The choice of insulin formulation depends on individual patient needs, lifestyle, and blood glucose monitoring results, and is determined in consultation with a healthcare professional. Insulin formulations can be administered via syringes, insulin pens, or insulin pumps.
