Origin and meaning: The word is a neologism formed from in- (into, within) and serie (series). It is not widely standardized, and definitions vary by discipline; critics emphasize either motif recurrence, cross-installment continuity, or both.

In practice: Inserie can manifest as a physical object reappearing across films or novels; a phrase or symbol appearing in multiple entries; or a backstory detail revealed incrementally. It can be overt (explicit callbacks) or subtle (background cues). The technique is used to reward attentive audiences and to expand narrative space across media, potentially enhancing coherence across a franchise or universe.
