Innbærere

Innbærere is a Norwegian term that translates to "bearers" or "carriers" in English. It is most commonly used in the context of heraldry and on coats of arms. In heraldry, an innbærer is a figure, typically an animal or human, that stands on either side of a shield, supporting or flanking it. These figures are often referred to as supporters in English heraldic terminology.

Innbærere are not always present on coats of arms. Their inclusion often depends on the rank and status of the person or institution to whom the coat of arms belongs. For example, royal coats of arms and those of high-ranking nobility frequently feature innbærere, whereas those of commoners typically do not. The specific creatures or figures chosen as innbærere are usually symbolic, representing qualities or historical associations relevant to the armiger (the owner of the coat of arms). Common examples include lions, eagles, griffins, or figures from mythology and history. The design and depiction of innbærere are subject to strict heraldic rules and conventions. The term can also be used more broadly to refer to any entity that carries or bears something, though its heraldic meaning is the most prevalent.
