Injektiohyökkäys, or injection attack in English, is a type of cyberattack where malicious code or data is inserted into a program or system. This inserted code is then executed by the vulnerable application, often leading to unauthorized access, data theft, or system manipulation. The core principle behind injection attacks is exploiting a program's trust in the data it receives. When a program processes untrusted input without proper validation or sanitization, it can interpret that input as executable commands rather than just data.

One of the most common forms of injection attack is SQL injection. In this scenario, an attacker injects malicious SQL statements into database queries. This can allow them to bypass authentication, retrieve sensitive data, or even modify or delete data within the database. Another prevalent type is cross-site scripting (XSS), where attackers inject malicious scripts, typically JavaScript, into web pages viewed by other users. This can lead to session hijacking, redirection to malicious sites, or the theft of user credentials.

Other variations of injection attacks exist, targeting different types of software and protocols, such as command injection, which inserts operating system commands, or LDAP injection, which targets directory services. The primary defense against injection attacks involves rigorous input validation and sanitization. Developers must ensure that all external input is treated as data and never as executable code, effectively preventing the injected malicious content from being processed as commands. Regular security audits and the use of parameterized queries or prepared statements are crucial measures to mitigate these vulnerabilities.
