Inhoudsontleding, often translated as content analysis, is a research method used to analyze the meaning of recorded communication. It is a systematic, objective, and, to some extent, quantitative description of the manifest content of communication. The primary goal of content analysis is to identify patterns, themes, and trends within textual or visual data.

This technique can be applied to a wide range of materials, including interviews, open-ended survey responses, social media posts, books, articles, speeches, films, and advertisements. Researchers define specific coding units, such as words, phrases, sentences, or images, and develop a coding scheme to categorize these units based on predefined criteria. The process involves systematically examining the data and assigning codes according to the established scheme.

The reliability of content analysis is ensured through inter-coder reliability, where multiple researchers independently code the same data to verify consistency. Validity is achieved by ensuring that the analysis accurately measures what it intends to measure, often through triangulation with other research methods or by clearly defining the research question and hypotheses.
