Inhalationsskada

Inhalationsskada, or inhalation injury, refers to damage to the respiratory tract caused by inhaling hot gases, smoke, or toxic chemicals. This type of injury commonly occurs in fires, where the inhalation of superheated air can cause thermal burns to the airways, while smoke can contain a variety of irritants and toxins that damage lung tissue and impair breathing. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and may not appear immediately.

The severity of inhalationsskada depends on the type of inhaled substance, the duration of exposure, and the temperature of the inhaled material. Thermal injury can lead to swelling of the airways, which can obstruct breathing. Chemical injury from smoke can cause inflammation, cellular damage, and the production of excessive mucus. Carbon monoxide poisoning is another common complication of smoke inhalation, as it reduces the blood's ability to carry oxygen.

Diagnosis often involves a physical examination, assessment of breathing, and sometimes imaging tests like chest X-rays or CT scans. Bronchoscopy, a procedure where a flexible camera is inserted into the airways, can also be used to directly visualize the damage. Treatment focuses on maintaining an open airway, providing supplemental oxygen, and managing any associated complications. In severe cases, mechanical ventilation may be necessary. Early recognition and prompt medical intervention are crucial for a positive outcome.
