Inhalaatorit, commonly known as inhalers, are medical devices used to deliver medication directly into the lungs. They are primarily prescribed for respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and cystic fibrosis. The main purpose of an inhaler is to provide rapid relief from symptoms by ensuring the medication reaches the airways efficiently.

There are several types of inhalers available, each with a different mechanism of action. Metered-dose inhalers (MDIs) are perhaps the most common. They release a measured dose of medication in a short burst of aerosolized spray when actuated. Dry powder inhalers (DPIs) deliver medication in a powdered form that is inhaled by the patient; they do not typically require a propellant. Nebulizers are another form of inhaler, though they are often larger, stationary devices that convert liquid medication into a fine mist, which is then inhaled over a period of several minutes. Soft mist inhalers (SMIs) are a newer type that generate a slow-moving mist, allowing for easier inhalation.

The effective use of an inhaler is crucial for successful treatment. Patients are typically instructed on the correct technique by their healthcare provider, as improper usage can lead to reduced medication delivery and limited therapeutic benefit. Regular cleaning and maintenance of inhalers are also important to ensure proper functioning and prevent contamination.
