A standard infusion system generally consists of several components. The primary element is often a bag or container holding the fluid to be infused. This is connected to tubing, which includes a roller clamp or other mechanism to regulate the flow rate. At the end of the tubing is usually a needle or catheter that is inserted into a vein. More advanced systems incorporate electronic infusion pumps. These pumps offer greater control over the delivery rate, volume, and timing of the infusion, and can be programmed for complex dosing regimens. They often include alarms to alert healthcare professionals to potential issues such as air in the line, blockages, or the end of the infusion.

Infusion systems are utilized for a wide range of medical purposes. They are essential for administering intravenous fluids to treat dehydration, maintaining hydration during surgery, or correcting electrolyte imbalances. Medications, including antibiotics, chemotherapy drugs, pain relievers, and insulin, are frequently delivered via infusion for more effective and rapid action. Nutrition can also be provided intravenously through total parenteral nutrition (TPN) when a patient cannot adequately absorb nutrients through their digestive system.
