Infrapunalämpökuvaus, often referred to as thermal imaging or thermography, is a technology that captures images based on the infrared radiation emitted by objects. All objects above absolute zero emit infrared radiation, and the intensity and wavelength of this radiation are dependent on the object's temperature. Infrared cameras detect this radiation and convert it into a visual image, where different colors or shades represent different temperature variations.

This technique is non-contact and can be used in various applications. In building inspections, it helps identify areas of heat loss, insulation defects, or moisture problems by revealing temperature differences on surfaces. In electrical maintenance, it can detect overheating components in machinery or power lines, which can be indicative of impending failure. Medical thermography uses thermal imaging to assess blood flow and inflammation, aiding in the diagnosis of certain conditions. Firefighting utilizes thermal cameras to see through smoke and locate people or the source of a fire. The military and security sectors employ it for surveillance and target detection, as it allows for visibility in low-light or obscured conditions. The resulting thermal images, or thermograms, provide valuable insights into the thermal behavior of objects and environments without direct physical interaction.
