Infrapunakuvatusta, often referred to as thermal imaging or thermography, is a method of capturing images based on the infrared radiation emitted by an object. All objects with a temperature above absolute zero emit infrared radiation, and the intensity of this radiation is proportional to the object's temperature. Infrared cameras are specialized devices that can detect and visualize this radiation, creating images where different colors represent different temperature levels.

This technology finds application in a wide range of fields. In building diagnostics, it's used to identify heat loss, insulation defects, and moisture problems, as well as to detect electrical faults. In the medical field, thermography can be used to monitor blood flow, detect inflammation, and assist in diagnosing certain conditions. Industrial maintenance employs it for predictive maintenance of machinery, spotting overheating components before they fail. Security and surveillance also utilize infrared imaging, especially in low-light or no-light conditions, as it can detect the heat signature of people or animals. Scientific research uses thermography for studying everything from environmental changes to material properties. The analysis of infrared images allows for non-contact temperature measurements and visualizes thermal patterns that are invisible to the naked eye.
