Informatsiooniühiskond, also known as the information society, refers to a societal model where the creation, distribution, dissemination, use, and integration of information is a significant economic, political, and cultural activity. In this type of society, information and knowledge are considered primary drivers of economic growth, social development, and individual well-being. This contrasts with previous societal models, such as the agrarian or industrial societies, where land or manufactured goods were the primary sources of wealth and power.

The emergence of the information society is closely linked to the rapid advancements in information and communication technologies (ICTs), particularly the internet and digital technologies. These technologies enable the easy access, processing, and sharing of vast amounts of information, transforming how people work, learn, communicate, and interact. Key characteristics include a large workforce employed in information-related sectors, a high level of educational attainment, and widespread access to technology and networks.

Economic activity in an information society is heavily reliant on the production and consumption of information goods and services. This can range from software development and data analysis to media production and financial services. Socially, it fosters new forms of communication and community building, often transcending geographical boundaries. However, challenges such as the digital divide, information overload, and concerns about privacy and security are also inherent to this societal model.
