Informationwidthbased is a theoretical construct in information theory that describes a family of measures aimed at quantifying information content relative to the width of a signal or resource used to convey it. Width can be interpreted as temporal duration, spectral bandwidth, spatial extent, or other resource dimensions. The central idea is to assess information efficiency by normalizing information by width, producing units such as bits per second per Hz or bits per second, depending on the width choice.

Definition and variants. A common formulation considers a stochastic process X(t) observed over a window of width W and uses a chosen information metric I(X; Y), such as mutual information. In this framing, an informationwidthbased quantity may be defined as IWB(X; Y; W) = I(X; Y) / W. Alternatively, in a per-symbol setting, one may define IWB as the ratio of entropy or mutual information to the average width per symbol. Different researchers may adopt variants using H(X), I(X; Y), or other information densities, reflecting different modeling assumptions about width and resource use.
