Inertsiaaltelje

Inertsiaaltelje, often translated as "axis of inertia" or "principal axis of inertia," is a fundamental concept in classical mechanics and physics, particularly in the study of rotational motion. It refers to a specific axis passing through an object's center of mass around which the object's moment of inertia is either maximized or minimized.

When an object rotates, its resistance to changes in that rotation is quantified by its moment of inertia. This moment of inertia is not constant for all possible axes of rotation; it depends on the distribution of mass relative to the axis. The inertsiaaltelje represents the directions where this resistance to angular acceleration is most stable, meaning that if an object is set into rotation around one of these axes, it will tend to continue rotating around that same axis with minimal wobbling or precession, assuming no external torques are applied.
