Inertiasuunnistusjärjestelmiä, often referred to as INS or Inertial Navigation Systems, are self-contained navigation systems that continuously determine an object's position, orientation, and velocity without external references. They achieve this by sensing and processing accelerations and angular rates using a combination of accelerometers and gyroscopes. These sensors measure the forces acting on the object.

The core principle behind INS is dead reckoning. Starting from a known initial position and velocity, the system integrates the measured accelerations over time to calculate changes in velocity and, subsequently, changes in position. Similarly, integrating angular rates provides information about changes in orientation. This process requires highly accurate sensors and sophisticated algorithms to compensate for drift, which is the inherent tendency of the system to accumulate errors over time due to sensor imperfections and environmental factors.

INS are characterized by their independence from external signals, making them resilient to jamming, spoofing, or signal loss that can affect systems like GPS. This autonomy is crucial for applications where continuous and reliable navigation is paramount. However, the accuracy of an INS degrades over time as errors accumulate. To mitigate this, INS are often fused with other navigation sources, such as GPS, magnetic compasses, or terrain matching systems, in a process known as sensor fusion. This combination leverages the strengths of each system, providing a more accurate and robust navigation solution.

Applications for INS are diverse and include aerospace (aircraft, spacecraft), marine navigation (ships, submarines), land vehicles (automobiles, military vehicles), and even in handheld devices for pedestrian navigation. Their ability to operate independently makes them vital for backup navigation systems and in environments where external signals are unreliable.
