Instead of issuing a direct command or making a straightforward assertion, the speaker or writer implies their intention or statement through subordinate clauses or specific sentence structures. This indirectness can serve various purposes, such as softening a request, showing politeness, or expressing uncertainty.

In some languages, the indirective mood is marked by specific verb conjugations or the use of particular modal particles. For example, a direct command like "Close the door" might be expressed indirectly as "It would be good if the door were closed" or "Could you close the door, please?" The latter, while still a question, functions as an indirect request.

The concept of indirective is closely related to politeness strategies in pragmatics. By avoiding directness, speakers can maintain social harmony and avoid imposing on the listener. It allows for a degree of subtlety in communication, where the speaker's true meaning is understood through context and shared understanding rather than explicit linguistic markers.
