Inbandvirhettä is a Finnish term that translates to "in-band error" in English. It refers to a type of error that occurs within a communication system or network where the error signal or status information is transmitted on the same channel or band as the primary data. This contrasts with out-of-band error reporting, where a separate channel is used for error management.

Inband errors can arise from various sources, including noise, interference, or faults within the transmission medium or the devices involved in communication. When an inband error occurs, it can corrupt the data being transmitted, leading to misinterpretation or complete loss of information. The system may then need to employ error detection and correction mechanisms to mitigate the impact of these errors.

The challenge with inband error reporting is that the error signal itself can be subject to the same transmission impairments as the data. This means that an error message intended to signal a problem might also be corrupted, making it difficult for the receiving end to accurately understand the nature or even the existence of the error. This can complicate troubleshooting and recovery processes.
