Imuliikkeitä, often translated as lymphatic movements or lymph drainage movements, refers to a set of gentle manual techniques designed to stimulate the flow of lymph fluid within the body's lymphatic system. This system plays a crucial role in immunity, fluid balance, and waste removal. Imuliikkeitä are characterized by slow, rhythmic, and superficial strokes that follow the direction of lymphatic pathways. The pressure applied is very light, barely compressing the skin, as lymph vessels are located close to the surface. The primary goal is to assist the natural movement of lymph, which lacks its own pump like the circulatory system.

These techniques are typically performed by trained therapists, such as physiotherapists or massage therapists specializing in lymphatic drainage. They involve specific hand placements and movements, often starting in areas with a high concentration of lymph nodes, like the neck, armpits, and groin. The movements aim to decongest and redirect lymph fluid from areas of congestion or swelling (edema) towards functional lymph nodes where it can be filtered and processed.

Imuliikkeitä are commonly used to treat conditions such as lymphedema, a swelling that occurs when the lymphatic system is damaged or blocked, often after surgery or radiation therapy. They can also be beneficial for post-operative recovery, to reduce swelling and bruising, and in some cases for managing chronic pain and improving relaxation. The gentle nature of the movements makes them suitable for individuals with sensitive conditions, although specific contraindications must always be considered by a qualified practitioner.
