Imtihonga

Imtihonga is the dative form of the Uzbek noun imtihon, meaning an examination. In Uzbek grammar the suffix -ga marks direction toward something, so imtihonga literally means “to the exam.” It is used in verb phrases that describe actions connected with examinations, such as going to, registering for, or taking part in an exam, as well as preparing for it.

Etymology and usage context: The word imtihon is a loanword that historically comes from Arabic emtihan (or related Persian/ Turkic forms). In modern Uzbek it appears in related terms such as imtihonlar (examinations) and imtihonchi (an examiner or invigilator). The form imtihonga can appear with various verbs to specify the exam as the target of an action, for example, imtihonga borish (to go to the exam) or imtihonga yozilish (to enroll for the exam).

Common phrases and examples: Imtihonga qatnashish (to participate in the exam), imtihonga tayyorlanish (to prepare for the exam), imtihonga ro‘yxatdan o‘tish or imtihonga yozilish (to register for the exam). In education systems, references to entrance exams for higher education are often described with this construction, such as “oliy ta’lim muassasalariga kirish imtihonlari” (entrance exams for higher education institutions).
