Imperfectief

Imperfectief, or imperfective, is a grammatical aspect that presents an action as ongoing, repeated, or not completed, without signaling its endpoint. It is contrasted with the perfectief (perfective) aspect, which treats the action as a bounded whole or completed. The distinction is common in many language families, though its formal realization varies.

In Dutch, imperfective is mainly realized through the onvoltooid verleden tijd (OVT), the simple past tense used for past actions described without focusing on their completion. It is typical for background information, habitual actions, or actions that were in progress at a past moment. For example: "Ik liep naar huis toen het begon te regenen" (I was walking home when it started to rain). "Elke dag liep hij naar school" (Every day he walked to school). In addition, Dutch can express imperfective aspect using periphrastic constructions such as was/waren aan het + infinitief: "Ik was aan het lezen toen de telefoon ging" (I was reading when the phone rang).

Across languages, imperfective is a widely attested category. In many language families it is morphologically marked with verb affixes or separate conjugations and often coexists with a distinct perfective form. The imperfective aspect helps speakers express ongoing actions, repeated events, habits, or situations viewed without regard to their completion.
