Immunisäätely, often translated as immunomodulation or immune regulation, refers to the complex processes by which the immune system controls its activity. This regulation is crucial for maintaining a balance between effectively fighting off pathogens and preventing excessive inflammation or autoimmune responses. The immune system must be able to distinguish between foreign invaders, such as bacteria and viruses, and the body's own tissues. This distinction is a fundamental aspect of immune regulation.

Key components of immunomodulation involve various cell types, signaling molecules called cytokines, and intricate feedback loops. Regulatory T cells (Tregs) play a significant role in suppressing immune responses and preventing autoimmunity. Conversely, effector immune cells, like T helper cells and B cells, are responsible for initiating and amplifying immune responses against specific threats. Cytokines act as messengers, either promoting or inhibiting immune cell activity.

Dysregulation of immunomodulatory mechanisms can lead to a variety of diseases. Autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, occur when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own cells and tissues due to a failure in self-tolerance. Immunodeficiency disorders, on the other hand, result from an impaired ability of the immune system to mount an adequate defense against infections.
