Immune-enhancing refers to mechanisms, agents, or practices intended to improve the function of the immune system to prevent disease or enhance its ability to respond to infection. The concept encompasses pharmacological products, biological agents, and nonpharmacological strategies that modulate immune activity. It is distinct from immune suppression or tolerance induction and from unproven claims of strengthening immunity beyond established medical guidance.

Pharmacological immune enhancers include vaccines and their adjuvants, which prime adaptive immunity, and immunotherapies that increase anti-pathogen or anti-tumor responses, such as cytokines or checkpoint inhibitors used in clinical settings. Some antiviral or anticancer drugs are designed to enhance immune recognition of targets, though their primary functions may be other mechanisms. Immunostimulants also include certain approved agents and biologics with documented immune-modulating effects.

Lifestyle and nutritional factors can influence immune function. Adequate sleep, regular physical activity, and stress management are associated with improved immune responses in some studies. Diets that supply sufficient vitamins and minerals (for example vitamins A, C, D, E; zinc; selenium) and a healthy gut microbiota may support immune health. Probiotics and some plant-derived compounds are studied for potential modulatory effects, but evidence varies by substance and condition.

Evidence quality ranges from well-established (e.g., vaccination) to preliminary or mixed for other supplements and lifestyle measures. Potential risks include excessive immune activation, autoimmune phenomena, or interactions with medications. Guidance typically emphasizes established preventive measures and individualized medical advice.
