Immersiosta, a Finnish term, describes a psychological state of deep engagement with a media form or activity, in which attention becomes focused on the embedded world or task and awareness of the real surroundings or time may diminish. The word, derived from English 'immersion,' is commonly used in discussions of video games, virtual reality, films, literature, and interactive storytelling.

Immersion manifests in several interrelated dimensions: sensory immersion (fidelity of visuals, sound, and interaction), cognitive immersion (suspension of disbelief and internal world-building), and affective or emotional immersion (empathy with characters, emotional arousal). Interactivity and agency are often central, as is consistent world-building, meaningful goals, and visible feedback.

Design and measurement: In practice, creators aim to balance challenge, skill, narrative coherence, and sensory realism to sustain immersion. Immersion is frequently discussed alongside related concepts such as presence and flow. Researchers may use self-report scales, behavioral data, and physiological measures to assess it, though definitions vary.

Applications and considerations: Immersion is a key objective in video games, VR experiences, immersive cinema, and experimental narratives. While it can enhance engagement and enjoyment, excessive immersion can lead to fatigue, discomfort in VR, or blurred boundaries between fiction and reality.
