Immature

Immature is an adjective used to describe something that is not fully formed, developed, or grown. It can apply to biological development, behavioral functioning, or other processes that have not yet reached a mature or finalized state. The term is commonly used for people or actions judged to lack maturity, but its meaning is context-dependent and not tied to a single age.

The word derives from Latin immaturus, meaning not ripe, and entered English via Old French. It contrasts with mature, denoting completed development or readiness.

In biology, an immature organism or life stage has not yet reached sexual maturity or the full adult form. Many species undergo distinct immature stages, such as larva and pupa in insects or tadpoles in amphibians, before becoming adults. Immaturity also can describe fruits or seeds that have not yet ripened.

In humans, immature behavior refers to actions perceived as lacking self-control, foresight, or social-emotional development. This use is evaluative and depends on context; immaturity can be temporary, with growth possible through experience or education, though some individuals may show persistent patterns.

Beyond biology and behavior, immaturity may describe processes or products not yet finished or ready, such as plans still under refinement.
