Imetyvyydestä, often translated as "breastfeeding" or "nursing," is the biological process by which a mother nourishes her infant by providing milk from her mammary glands. This practice is a fundamental aspect of mammalian reproduction and has been observed for millennia.

Breast milk is a complex substance composed of water, carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals, as well as antibodies and other immune factors. These components are tailored to meet the specific nutritional and developmental needs of a growing infant. The composition of breast milk can change over time, adapting to the infant's age and health status.

The act of breastfeeding involves a physiological response in both the mother and the infant. For the mother, it can stimulate the release of hormones such as oxytocin, which aids in uterine contraction after childbirth and promotes bonding. For the infant, sucking triggers the let-down reflex, allowing milk to flow.

Beyond nutrition, breastfeeding is associated with numerous benefits for both mother and child. For infants, it provides passive immunity, protecting against infections and potentially reducing the risk of allergies and certain chronic diseases later in life. For mothers, it can contribute to postpartum recovery and may lower the risk of certain cancers.

The duration and exclusivity of breastfeeding vary significantly across cultures and individuals, influenced by factors such as societal support, cultural norms, and individual circumstances. While exclusive breastfeeding is recommended by many health organizations for the first six months of life, continued breastfeeding alongside complementary foods is often encouraged thereafter.
