Imagetoimage is a broad set of computational techniques that transform an input image into a different output image while preserving certain properties such as structure, layout, or semantics. It is a core area within image-to-image translation, focusing on learning mappings between image domains or styles rather than generating images directly from text or noise.

Most imagetoimage methods fall into paired and unpaired categories. Paired approaches learn from aligned input–output image pairs, using conditional models such as pix2pix and its high-resolution variants. Unpaired approaches rely on cycle consistency to translate between domains without exact pairs, exemplified by CycleGAN and related architectures.

Techniques include convolutional neural networks, generative adversarial networks, and diffusion-based models. Tasks range from colorization and edge-to-photo synthesis to semantic map or label-to-image translation, as well as super-resolution, inpainting, style transfer, and domain adaptation.

Applications span art and design, film post-production, satellite and medical imaging, and automated restoration. Evaluations use metrics such as PSNR, SSIM, FID, and LPIPS, and datasets like edges2shoes, facades, maps, and Cityscapes provide common benchmarks.

Challenges include preserving fine details, avoiding artifacts, and mitigating domain gaps between source and target domains. Ethical concerns arise from potential misuse such as deepfakes and copyright issues, underscoring the need for transparency, detection tools, and responsible deployment.
