In common usage, it refers to a misinterpretation of sensory input, leading to a perception that differs from objective reality. These are often involuntary and can affect any of the senses, though visual illusions are the most widely studied and recognized. Optical illusions can arise from the way our brains process visual information, exploiting common perceptual mechanisms. For instance, the Ponzo illusion demonstrates how the brain interprets the size of objects based on converging lines, making a top line appear longer than a bottom line of the same length.
Illusions can also be auditory, tactile, or olfactory, though they are less frequently encountered in everyday
