Ilmeniitin

Ilmeniitti is a mineral composed of iron and titanium oxide, with the chemical formula FeTiO3. It is a primary ore of titanium and is also a source of iron. Ilmeniitti typically crystallizes in the trigonal crystal system and often forms in igneous rocks. It is commonly found in mafic and ultramafic rocks, such as gabbros and anorthosites, as well as in placer deposits derived from the weathering of these rocks. The mineral is opaque with a metallic luster and is typically black or brownish-black in color. It is relatively soft, with a Mohs hardness of 5 to 6.

Ilmeniitti is a widespread mineral, occurring in various geological settings around the world. Significant deposits are found in Australia, Norway, Canada, and South Africa, among other locations. The extraction of titanium from ilmeniitti is a complex industrial process. Titanium is a valuable metal known for its high strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and ability to withstand high temperatures, making it essential in aerospace, medical implants, and the production of pigments, notably titanium dioxide (TiO2), which is used as a white pigment in paints, plastics, and paper.
