Ilmasuihku

Ilmasuihku, also known as a jet engine or jet propulsion engine, is a type of internal combustion engine that produces thrust by expelling a jet of hot exhaust gases. It is widely used in aircraft, particularly in military and commercial aviation, as well as in some high-speed ground vehicles. The term "ilmasuihku" is Finnish for jet engine, reflecting its origin in the Finnish language.

The basic principle behind a jet engine is the same as that of a rocket engine, but it differs in that it uses the surrounding air as its oxidizer, rather than carrying its own. This allows for a much higher thrust-to-weight ratio, making jet engines ideal for high-speed flight. The engine works by drawing in air, compressing it, mixing it with fuel, igniting the mixture, and then expelling the hot exhaust gases at high velocity.

There are several types of jet engines, including turbojet, turbofan, and ramjet engines. Turbojet engines are the simplest type, consisting of a compressor, combustion chamber, and turbine. Turbofan engines, on the other hand, have an additional fan that draws in air and bypasses it around the engine core, increasing thrust and fuel efficiency. Ramjet engines are designed for supersonic speeds and do not have a compressor or turbine, instead relying on the forward motion of the aircraft to compress the incoming air.

Jet engines have revolutionized air travel, making long-distance flights possible and affordable. They have also been used in military applications, providing the speed and maneuverability needed for modern combat aircraft. Despite their many advantages, jet engines also have significant environmental impacts, including noise pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. As a result, there is ongoing research into developing more efficient and environmentally friendly jet engines.
