Ilmastotiloja refers to the classification of climate types based on specific criteria. This system helps scientists and researchers understand and compare the climate conditions of different regions around the world. Several classification systems exist, each with its own methodology and focus. One of the most widely recognized systems is the Köppen climate classification, which categorizes climates based on temperature and precipitation patterns.

The Köppen system divides the world into five main climate groups: A (tropical), B (dry), C (temperate), D (continental), and E (polar). Each of these groups is further subdivided into more specific types, allowing for a detailed description of local climate conditions. For example, within the tropical group (A), there are tropical rainforest (Af), tropical monsoon (Am), and tropical savanna (Aw) climates, distinguished by their seasonal rainfall patterns.

Other climate classification systems may consider factors beyond temperature and precipitation, such as humidity, wind patterns, or the duration of specific weather phenomena. The purpose of these classifications is to provide a standardized framework for understanding global climate variability, identifying regions prone to certain environmental challenges, and projecting the potential impacts of climate change. By categorizing climates, scientists can better analyze trends, develop adaptation strategies, and communicate complex climate information effectively.
